The first few days
Start your kitten in one quiet room with food, water, a litter box, a scratching post, a bed and a few toys. Once they are eating, using the litter box and coming to you confidently, open up the rest of the house a room at a time.
Litter box
- Keep the box well away from food and water.
- Scoop daily and refresh the litter regularly.
- A good rule of thumb is one box per cat, plus one.
Play and exercise
Ragdolls are gentle and people-oriented, but kittens still need daily play. Wand toys, balls and puzzle feeders help build confidence and burn off energy. Avoid playing with hands and feet so that biting never becomes a game.
Indoors and safety
Ragdolls are trusting by nature and are generally safest as indoor cats, or with access only to a secure enclosure or "catio". Check window screens, keep washing machine and dryer doors closed, and tidy away cords, string and hair ties.
Routine veterinary care
Book a check-up with your own veterinarian soon after your kitten comes home, and follow their advice on vaccinations, parasite prevention and microchip registration.
